Most people think of trauma as a catastrophe, mother nature wielding her power through earthquakes, floods, storms etc. or perhaps something traumatic like murder or rape. These events are very traumatic, however, there are many other things that are perceived as traumatic to the individual. Trauma is what the mind and body are unable to cope with and therefore unable to process and resolve. These events could be a series of events that have compounded over time and led to physical and mental breakdowns from a seemingly small event.
As someone sitting on the outside of this person’s life, it’s not our place to judge how this seemingly small event has sent them over the edge……because we don’t know their story and how they got to where they currently are in their life. What we can do is be there to listen and validate their story, because it’s real for them no matter how small it may be to you. Guide them to seek help because once they have reached this point, they are no longer able to resolve the trauma without deeper unconscious work even if they consciously believe they have worked through it.
When we hold onto unresolved trauma, it makes us sick, physically and mentally sick, and we get sick because our body is in a constant state of fight, flight, freeze and fawn. It takes a lot of energy to keep our body in this state while other systems in our body take a back seat, because you don't need your digestive system to be working at full capacity while you are being chased by a bear. Your mind and body perceive you have an immediate threat to your life, so it prepares your body to take on this threat. When you stay in this heightened state of arousal for years, and in some cases decades, your body gets tired and worn out and weakens your immune system, making you very susceptible to disease and illness.
